Opportunities for Research

Many of our projects are collaborative in nature, involving researchers from engineering, basic medical sciences, molecular biology, biochemistry and biomedical sciences.  Our research can have multiple dimensions related to biosensors and biochips.  We are interested in basic research and development and also translation of our results into meaningful products.

Our lab members publish journal articles, present at conferences, compete in competitions, do outreach, develop prototypes, write computer codes, and much more!

Graduate Students

We always welcome self-motivated graduate students for long-term Research Associate positions. You could have background in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences/Technology, Materials, or even Programming.  Experience in a cleanroom or in micro-fabrication/MEMS would be a plus.

If you are a permanent resident, national or citizen of the United States, there may be scholarships and fellowships that you can apply for.  Study-abroad and exchange student opportunities may also be available.

If interested, please email Dr. Iqbal, and include the following:

  • Are you MS thesis or non-thesis student?

  • Are you already a student at UTRGV?

  • Detailed Resume/CV in PDF format

  • Any publications or presentations

  • Research Interests

  • Research Experience/Relevant Skills

  • GRE & TOEFEL (if applicable) Scores

Non-Student Internships

If you are not a student at UTRGV, we cannot provide any financial support of any kind (i.e. travel, salary, housing) to do an internship with us.  Your inquiries on this subject may not be answered.

If you already have a sources of financial support for doing an internship in our lab, state in the subject "FUNDED RESEARCH". Identify the funding agency and mechanism of such support.

Please email Dr. Iqbal, and include the following:

  • Summary proposal of the project

  • Length of expected stay with Nano-Bio Lab

  • Detailed Resume/CV in PDF format

  • Previous Lab Experience and Skills

  • Any publications or presentations

  • GRE & TOEFEL (if applicable) Scores

Graduate Projects

We may have some semester long exploratory  projects for graduate students. Please send the following to Dr. Iqbal to evaluate the possibility of a project:

  • Summary proposal of the project

  • Length of studies at UTRGV

  • Current GPA

  • How far from graduation

  • Amount of coursework transferred

  • Whether the project is part of coursework

  • Prior research experience/skills

  • Prior faculty mentors

  • List of references

  • Contact info of departmet advisor

You may be asked for additional information to gauge your suitability for a project.

Undergraduate Students

We are very interested in engaging highly-motivated Undergraduate students in our lab.  Some of our research can be part of your undergraduate projects / studies / internship.

You can get trained in micro-fabrication, computer simulation and may work on some cool stuff that has never seen the light outside our lab.  The projects could also be in circuit design, software development for data acquisition/analysis, developing microfluidics, etc.

If interested, please email Dr. Iqbal, and include the following:

  • Detailed Resume/CV in PDF format

  • GPA

  • Previous Lab Experience
